Centuries before Lewis and Clark would arrive via the Oregon Trail in 1805, the land that would go on to become Portland was inhabited by the indigineous Chinook people. After 1840, the area was dubbed "Stumptown", due to the massive number of trees that were cleared to make way for settlements. In 1851, the land was bought by the respective owners of Boston, MA and Portland, ME. Both wanting to rename "Stumptown" after their homes back east, they settled the debate by coin toss. Portland won, best 2 out of 3.
